Samaria Gorge: A Hiker's Paradise in Crete

If you're planning a trip to Crete, one of the must-do activities is hiking the Samaria Gorge. This stunning natural wonder is the longest gorge in Europe, and it's considered one of the top hiking destinations in Greece.

The Samaria Gorge is located in the White Mountains National Park in southwestern Crete. The gorge is 16 kms long and takes approximately 5-7 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level and pace. It's a challenging hike, yet rewarding experience for anyone who loves the great outdoors.

Samaria Gorge Hike

Distance: 14.5km

Elevation gain: 2,636m

Hike type: Point to point

Difficulty: Intermediate

The route: All Trails

The trail begins at the Omalos Plateau, which is around 1200 meters above sea level. From there, you'll descend through the gorge, following the river that flows through it. The path is well marked and maintained, but there are some steep and rocky sections, so it's essential to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks. As you hike through the gorge, you'll be surrounded by soaring cliffs, crystal-clear streams, and lush vegetation.

The highlight of the hike is the Iron Gates, where the walls of the gorge narrow to just 4 meters wide, and rise up to a height of over 300 meters.

Along the way, you'll also pass through several small villages and see remnants of ancient settlements that date back thousands of years. The Samaria Gorge is not only a natural wonder but also a place rich in history and culture.

At the end of the hike, you'll reach the small village of Agia Roumeli, which is located on the coast. Here you can relax on the beach, swim in the crystal-clear waters, and enjoy a well-deserved meal at one of the local tavernas.

If you're planning to hike the Samaria Gorge, it's important to note that the trail is only open from May to October.

Here are some more tips for hiking Samaria Gorge:

  1. Start early: Best to start the hike early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds. The park opens at 7 am, and I’d recommend to start the hike no later than 8 am.

  2. Wear appropriate shoes: The terrain in the gorge is rocky and uneven, so it is important to wear sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support. Do not wear sandals or flip-flops.

  3. Bring plenty of water and snacks: Bring at least 2l of water per person. There are no shops or restaurants in the gorge, so you may want to bring some snacks or a packed lunch.

  4. Protect yourself from the Sun: The gorge can be very hot during the summer months. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen regularly.

  5. Pace yourself: The hike can take between 5-7 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level. Take your time and rest when needed. There are several resting points along the way with benches and drinking water fountains.

  6. Follow the trail markers: The trail is well-marked with signs and colored arrows. Stick to the marked trail to avoid getting lost.

  7. Respect the environment: The Samaria Gorge is a protected national park, so it is important to respect the environment. Stay on the marked trail, do not litter and do not disturb the wildlife.
